Confucius was a Chinese teacher and thinker who lived more than 2,500 years ago. He was born around 551 BCE in a small state called Lu, in what is now eastern China. His ideas about how people should treat each other shaped Chinese culture for thousands of years. They still shape it today. His name in Chinese is Kongzi, which means "Master Kong." European visitors later turned that name into Confucius.
Confucius grew up poor. His father died when he was about three years old, and his mother raised him alone. He worked simple jobs as a young man, including caring for animals and keeping records of grain. But he loved learning. He studied old books, music, and the customs of earlier times. By his thirties, he was teaching students of his own.
What he taught was not exactly a religion. It was more a guide for how to live. He believed people should be kind, honest, and respectful, especially to their parents and elders. He taught that rulers should care about their people instead of just their own power. One of his most famous ideas is sometimes called the Golden Rule: "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself." He said this about 500 years before Jesus said something similar.
Confucius wanted to work as an advisor to a king. He spent years traveling from one Chinese state to another, hoping a ruler would listen to him. Most did not. He died in 479 BCE thinking he had failed. He had no idea what was coming.
After his death, his students wrote down what he had taught. The most famous of these books is called the Analects. It is a short collection of his sayings and conversations. Hundreds of years later, during the Han Dynasty, Chinese emperors made his ideas the official teaching of the government. For nearly 2,000 years, anyone who wanted a job in the Chinese government had to pass tests on Confucian books.
His influence spread far beyond China. Korea, Japan, and Vietnam all built parts of their cultures around his teachings. Today, schools called Confucius Institutes teach Chinese language and culture in many countries. The poor boy who once herded animals became one of the most read teachers in human history.
