The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia made up of thousands of islands. The islands sit in the western Pacific Ocean, south of Taiwan and east of Vietnam. The country has about 115 million people, which makes it one of the most populated countries in the world. Its capital city is Manila. The official languages are Filipino and English.
The Philippines has 7,641 islands in total. That is more islands than there are days in 20 years. Most people live on just eleven of them. The three largest are Luzon in the north, Mindanao in the south, and the Visayas island group in the middle. If you stretched the country's coastline into a straight line, it would wrap more than halfway around the Earth.
The islands were built by volcanoes. The Philippines sits on the Ring of Fire, a zone of Earth's crust where many earthquakes and eruptions happen. The country has about 24 active volcanoes. One of them, Mount Mayon, has an almost perfect cone shape. Typhoons, which are huge Pacific storms, also hit the country about 20 times each year.
People have lived in the Philippines for at least 50,000 years. For most of that time, the islands were home to many small kingdoms and trading groups. In 1521, a Spanish expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan arrived. Spain then ruled the islands for more than 300 years and named them after King Philip II. That is where the word "Philippines" comes from. After the Spanish-American War in 1898, the United States took control. The Philippines finally became an independent country on July 4, 1946.
Because so many groups have passed through, Filipino culture mixes many traditions. Spanish names are common. Most Filipinos are Catholic, which is unusual in Asia. American shows, fast food, and basketball are also popular. At the same time, older traditions from before Spanish times are still alive. People in different regions speak more than 180 languages at home, including Tagalog, Cebuano, and Ilocano.
The country grows rice, sugarcane, coconuts, and bananas. Coconut oil is one of its biggest exports. Millions of Filipinos also work in other countries as nurses, sailors, and teachers, and send money home to their families.
The Philippines is famous for its natural beauty. It has white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and underground rivers. The waters around the islands are part of the Coral Triangle, which holds more kinds of sea life than anywhere else on Earth.
