Social media is a group of websites and apps that let people share posts, photos, videos, and messages with each other online. Users can also see what other people share and react to it. Some of the most popular sites are Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, and X (which used to be called Twitter). Social media became part of daily life in the early 2000s, after the internet was already common in homes.

The basic idea is simple. You make an account, build a list of friends or followers, and post things you want to share. Other people can like, comment, or share your posts with their own followers. A funny video posted by one person can be seen by millions of people in a single day.

Behind every social media app is a computer program called an algorithm. The algorithm decides which posts you see and in what order. It learns what you tend to watch or click on, and then shows you more of the same. This is why two people using the same app can see very different things. The companies that run these apps make money from ads, so the algorithms are built to keep you scrolling for as long as possible.

Social media has changed the world in big ways. It helps families stay in touch across long distances. It lets young people share art, music, and dance with the whole planet. During emergencies, it spreads news faster than television. Protests and movements have grown out of a single post.

But there are real worries too. False information can spread as fast as true information, sometimes faster. Many studies have found links between heavy social media use and feelings of sadness, worry, or loneliness, especially in teenagers. Doctors and scientists are still studying exactly how strong these effects are and which apps cause the most harm. Several countries have passed laws limiting how kids can use social media, and the debates over those laws are far from settled.

Most apps require users to be at least 13 years old. Many kids sign up younger anyway. Schools and parents are still figuring out the best rules. The technology is new, and the tools to use it wisely are even newer. Every generation has had to learn how to handle a powerful new way of talking to each other. Social media is the version this generation gets to figure out.
