A novel is a long story written in prose, made up by the author. "Prose" just means regular sentences and paragraphs, the way people normally write and talk. Novels are usually published as books. Most are between 200 and 500 pages long. The story and characters are invented, though they may be based on real people or real events.
The word "novel" comes from the Italian word novella, which means "new." When the form first became popular in Europe, it really was something new. Before novels, most long stories were told as poems or plays. A novel did something different. It followed regular people through everyday life, often for hundreds of pages, and let readers see inside their thoughts.
People disagree about which book was the first novel. Many scholars point to The Tale of Genji, written in Japan around the year 1010 by a noblewoman named Murasaki Shikibu. Others say the first modern novel was Don Quixote, written by Miguel de Cervantes in Spain in 1605. Both books are still read today, more than 400 years later.
Novels come in many types, called genres. A mystery novel hides a secret the reader tries to solve. A fantasy novel takes place in a made-up world, often with magic. Science fiction imagines the future or other planets. Historical novels are set in the real past. Realistic fiction tells stories that could happen in everyday life. A single novel can mix several genres at once.
Most novels are built from a few basic parts. There are characters, the people the story is about. There is a setting, the time and place where it happens. There is a plot, the events that unfold. And there is a theme, the bigger idea the story explores, like courage, friendship, or fairness.
Novels became hugely popular in the 1700s and 1800s, when more people learned to read and printing got cheaper. Authors like Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Mark Twain wrote books that millions of readers shared. Today, novels are still everywhere. They appear as paper books, audiobooks, and e-books on tablets and phones.
Reading a novel is a strange kind of magic. You stare at marks on a page, and somehow a whole world appears in your head. No two readers picture it exactly the same way.
