Astronomy is the science of studying objects and events in space. People who do astronomy are called astronomers. They study stars, planets, moons, galaxies, black holes, and the universe as a whole. Astronomy is the oldest science. Humans have been watching the sky and writing down what they see for more than 5,000 years.

Ancient people used the sky as a calendar and a map. The Babylonians tracked the movement of planets. The ancient Egyptians used the star Sirius to predict when the Nile River would flood. Sailors used stars to find their way across the ocean at night. Long before clocks or GPS, the sky told people where they were and what time of year it was.

For most of history, astronomers had only their eyes. That changed in 1609, when Galileo Galilei pointed a new invention called the telescope at the night sky. He saw mountains on the Moon, moons going around Jupiter, and rings around Saturn. Telescopes have been getting bigger and better ever since. Today, giant telescopes sit on mountaintops, and others float in space, far above the blurring air of Earth.

Space is so big that astronomers measure distance in light-years. A light-year is how far light travels in one year, about 6 trillion miles. The nearest star after the Sun is more than four light-years away. That means the light hitting your eyes from that star left it four years ago. When you look up at the night sky, you are actually looking back in time.

Astronomers today study many things we still do not understand. They look for planets around other stars, called exoplanets, to see if any might support life. They study dark matter, a strange kind of stuff that seems to make up most of the universe, even though no one has ever seen it. They watch black holes swallow gas and stars. Some astronomers listen for signals from other civilizations, though none have ever been found.

Astronomy is different from astrology. Astrology claims that stars and planets shape your personality or your future. Scientists have tested this idea many times, and there is no evidence that it works. Astronomy, on the other hand, uses math, physics, and careful observation to learn what is really out there.

Anyone can start doing astronomy. All you need is a clear night and a patch of dark sky.
